Hello Pack 249!

Here are our December upcoming events:

On December 4th and 5th is Extreme games down in Miami, please see the enclosed link for more details.

Tuesday December 1st we have our Monthly Pack planning Meeting. It starts at 7 pm and is held at the church where we have our pack meetings. The meeting is held around back in the chior room. If you want to get involved or have some input related to our pack meetings and events, this is the meeting to join us and find out what it is all about.

Monday December 7th there is Round Table meeting, which is held for our district. If anyone is interested in getting involved at a leadership level and would like to attend one of the meetings with our leaders, please let me know.

Tuesday December 8th, advancements are due.

Saturday December 12th there is a Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation training (aka - Baloo training). This training is open to parents and leaders who want to help run a succeful overnight camping trip. If their is anyone interested in attending this course and getting certified please let me know, we would greatly appreciate it as a pack!

Wednesday December 16th at 7 pm, we are going to participate in the Coral Springs holiday parade. Please have your son dressed in Class "A' uniforms. We do this event every year and it is always a great time, I hope to see you there!

Deerfield Fishing Pier Cost $4.00 for cub scouts, All others see Dock Master

Registration 7:00am Derby from 8:00am to 11:00am

Bring your own pole, drinks and snacks. Limited number of poles for loan. You can buy bait at the pier. Single hooks on line. Cub scout must catch fish himself and land it un-aided.

Fwd: Winter Family Campout / Blue & Gold - Feb. 6th - Feb. 8th

Pack 249,

This weekend we will be having our Winter Family Camp-out at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. (Approx. 45 minutes from Coral Springs / Parkland) The cost of the camp-out is $3.00 per person per night. We will be finalizing our agenda during our Pack Planning Meeting this Tuesday and will send out more details on Wednesday. We are planning to do S'mores, a Bike trail trip (helmets req.), go fishing and play some outdoor basketball to name a few things.

On Saturday, starting at 4 pm we will have our Blue & Gold Celebration which celebrates 89 years of scouting. This ceremony will begin with a Pack Barbecue, each Den will provide its own hot dogs, burgers, etc and we will cook and eat as a pack. We will also be doing an Advancement Ceremony and awarding rack patch's and conducting a flag retirement ceremony among other things. Card for a Soldier

This holiday season I would appreciate it if you can have each cub scout make or buy a holiday card for a soldier. If all of the den leaders can collect them and email me once they have the cards from the scouts that would like to participate in this...I will make arrangements to get them from you. Due to the fact that you are all receiving this the second week of December (my fault) perhaps the cards could be a "Happy New Year" card.

Keep in mind these cards will be going to an Army unit deployed in Iraq. These soldiers are giving up the holidays with their loved ones so we can live in peace with our loved ones. Thank you for your assistance in this effort to spread good cheer from Pack 249!

Fall Family Campout, Nov 21-23

Dear Pack 249 Families:

I am very excited to invite everyone to participate in out first campout. We have reserved several tent sites at Collier-Seminole State Park (http://www.floridastateparks.org/collier-seminole/) for Fri - Sun, Nov 21-23. This campground offers bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. Since we have a limited number of spots, EVERYONE MUST PAY ON OR BEFORE THE NOV PACK MEETING (11/18).

This will be an exciting outdoor experience in a beautiful Everglades setting. Everyone in your family is welcome to join us for hiking, biking (bring your own bike and helmet), canoeing (canoes available for rental), and/or fishing. All Scouts can earn advancement; learn new Scouting skills; and have lots of fun exploring the wilderness. Our Saturday evening campfire will involve everyone and include a flag retirement ceremony, and on Sunday we will close with a Scouts' Own service.

The cost is $30 per family. This covers the park fees, s'mores, and Sat dinner (ALL WEBELOS WILL SHARE IN COOKING AND CLEANING). Dens should arrange for all other meals. In an effort to lessen our impact, we ask all Scouts and families to bring eating utensils (we will have them for Sat dinner if you can't). Webelos Scouts are expected to have these. Also, every Scout must bring their full uniform (Class A) and Pack t-shirt. Den Leaders need to make sure all attendees have camping gear. Please, let Alejandro, Steve, or Keenan know if any equipment is needed.

The drive is about 2 hours. You may arrive any time Fri or Sat, and you may leave at any time. We plan to organize Pack activities for Sat, as well as provide time for families and Dens to enjoy some time on their own. Tigers must have an adult family member present; and if any older Scout attends without a parent, a permission slip designating another responsible adult must be submitted (and separate tent arrangements must be made). We do not use electronic devices on campouts (ipod, stereo, tv, video game, etc.), so please leave them at home. Adults may carry a cell phone, but we ask you to keep it quiet and use it privately. Alcohol is strictly prohibited at all BSA functions, and tobacco products need to be used away from Scouts.

I am really pleased to announce that Pack 249 has a new Cubmaster! Alejandro Roca has agreed to take on the role for the coming year. Alejandro has been an active parent in the Pack for some time now, and is eager to take on this leadership role.

Keenan has offered to serve in an Assistant Cubmaster role, as well as his important job as Webelos patrol leader. He and I will begin working on transitioning Alejandro into the Cubmaster role immediately.

I'm sure that all of you who know Alejandro are as excited as I am to welcome him to the team. Now that all the pieces are in place, it's on to a great year of Scouting!

I'd really like to thank everyone who attended our planning sessions earlier this week: Karol Bailey, Jeff Beebe, Olivia Creary, Rodney Creary, Dennis Dodge, Rick Haight, Scott Hughes, Keenan Klos, Maureen Matzner, Melanie Parker, Jackie Polyak, John Polyak, Steve Rietberg, Kara Seelye and Patty Shannon. It really was a pleasure working with this team to plan our activities and make some important decisions for the coming year.

Please take a moment to read through our meeting notes. There are a few important items in there, especially regarding monthly duty assignments for many of the Den leaders. I've also updated the Pack calendar with the results of our conversations.

We're all looking forward to a great year. Thanks again for all your involvement and support!

Please mark your calendars for next week. We'll be conducting our annual planning meeting over two sessions, June 2nd and 3rd, from 7pm to 9pm each evening. Both sessions will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Coral Springs in the Choir Room.

At the meeting, our main goals will be:
1. planning for the coming year including Pack meetings, pack planning meetings, campouts (timing and locale) and other Pack events
2. agree on fundraising activities for the year
3. discuss any remaining volunteer roles that need to be filled

If you have other topics please let me know. All Pack 249 parents and volunteers are encouraged to join us. If you'd like to contribute to Pack, this is a great place to start!

Cub Scout Day Camp: June 16-20 at Quiet Waters Park

Please review this for details on South Florida Council's Day Camps. This program is so much fun for the Scouts, and provides them opportunities for many advancements (Belt Loops and Achievements towards next year).

Parents are needed as volunteers, so if you can spend the week there, please sign up on the form. If you can volunteer for the week, they may be able to give your son the week for free. Otherwise, consider spending at least one day at camp to help out.

Spring Camporee registration deadline

Attention all scouts and scouters... registration and fees for the Lighthouse District Spring Camporee are due by Friday 4/18. Leaders, please collect $20/head for all attendees and deliver to Dennis Dodge. Upon receiving the registrants' information, Dennis will be contacting each of the leaders to confirm their eating arrangements, etc. Additionally, all Webelos scouts will be informed of upcoming practice sessions for gateway and campsite setup.

Party at Goodyear Blimp Base - Thursday 3/27

Sandy at Greystone Refrigeration has graciously invited Pack 249 to be her guests at the Goodyear Blimp base in Pompano Beach on Thursday 3/27. The attached invitation is needed for admission. There will be games, food and prizes - including a raffle for a blimp ride!

The blimp base is located at 1500 NE 5th Ave, Pompano Beach. The event lasts from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Scouts should wear their class A uniforms. Please contact Dennis with questions.

Scout Town 3/25

Tuesday, March 25 at 7pm is our Pack Meeting, SCOUT TOWN!

Get ready for one of the most exciting meetings of the year. Each Den will construct a design of their choice with nothing but newspapers and tape. I hope you've practiced, because the competition will be fierce this year.

Make sure every Scout brings at least 50 rolled up full-sized newspaper sheets. You might be surprised how quickly they get used, and you won't have time to roll them during the meeting. We will provide you with a few rolls of masking tape and Scotch tape. Three ribbons will be awarded, one each for: Most Creative Concept, Outstanding Teamwork, and Best Overall Construction. This is a Scout activity, so we want the Scouts building without parent involvement as much as possible.

Of course the competition concludes with the best part: the Scouts get to destroy everything.

WEBELOS Outdoor Leader Training, March 28-30

The WEBELOS Outdoor Leader Training course is coming-up March 28th - 30th. This training is for WEBELOS leaders and future WEBELOS leaders who want to learn the ins and outs of Cub Scout camping. This is required training for leaders to be able to take their scouts out on den camp-outs. Also, this training is open to all scout parents. The flyer below provides the details:

Den 3 invitation to Renaissance Festival

Den 3 would like to cordially invite all the other dens to a trip to the
Renaissance festival with us.

Come celebrate the Renaissance with Den 3! We will be having a day out
at the Renaissance Festival on Saturday, March 1st at 10:00. If we can
get 7 scouts together in uniform, they all get in for free! The plan
is to meet outside the ticket booth and see if we can get 7 scouts or
more together to go in. If we don't get the 7 we will just pay - of
course. We will be inviting the whole Pack to help us make the 7.
Siblings, friends or whatever are also welcome to come along (as

Pinewood Derby update - FINAL DATE ANNOUNCED

The Pack 249 Pinewood Derby race will be Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2pm-5pm at First Church. The weigh-in will be Friday, Feb. 22 from 6-7pm at First Church. If you cannot make the weigh-in, please have someone take your car for you. If that is not possible, speak to your Den Leader who can arrange a solution.

I have forwarded the Lighthouse District's PWD rules and race announcement. There is no limitation as to who may attend this year.

We will follow these rules. Please note the addition of a couple of rules from last year: the wheel base cannot be lengthened and the wood (as well as the wheels and axels) must be from the BSA kit. DO NOT PURCHASE A PINEWOOD DERBY KIT FROM ANYWHERE OTHER THAN THE BSA. You shouldn't need another kit, of course. Please, direct all questions to your Den Leader. We will conduct an open division following the same rules, though we will award only one trophy. The open division is for anyone other than a Cub Scout (or an additional Scout car).

We still need someone to volunteer to run this event. The commitment is short and not very demanding, but definitely needed. Please, let me know.

The Pinewood Derby is a classic Cub Scout experience that everyone will enjoy. Please, let your Scout build and design his car. Then come and have fun!

Dec 18 Pack Meeting location

The Dec. 18 Pack Meeting will be held at the Parkland Equestrian Center. This outdoor pavilion works great for meetings, and I'm excited to meet there. We have a fun meeting planned, so everyone needs to join us!

Den flags will be presented, so don't forget them. Also, this is the last chance for submitting dues. After this, Scouts will be dropped from the registration which prevents them from receiving advancement until they re-register. Please, help us finish this.

Meeting directions: the PARKLAND EQUESTRIAN CENTER (8350 Ranch Rd) is on the North side of Holmberg Rd. just West of Riverside Dr. From Holmberg Rd. go North on NW 87th Ave. to the first stop sign, turn right on to Ranch Rd. and proceed to the large pavilion ahead on the right. Coral Springs Holiday Parade - Dec 12

The Coral Springs Holiday Parade will take place on Wednesday, December 12 at 7pm. We're organizing the Pack to walk in the parade.

The plan is to meet at 6:30pm to line up before the parade. We recommend you park at the Coral Springs Charter School (the end of the parade route), where shuttles will be available to take you to the starting point near Sample Rd & Coral Springs Dr. The shuttles run from 5 to 6:30, so don't be late!

Please have all scouts wear their class A uniforms.
